  • Jim-Lewis-1

Jim was born in 1948 in Plummers Landing, Kentucky. He worked as an operator of heavy machinery at a strip mine until, one day in the late 1980’s, Jim got laid off. Having carved a bit as a hobby, he started making art full time to keep busy.

Jim’s neighbor, Minnie Adkins introduced him to the world of folk art, and soon Jim channeled his fertile imagination and talent as a wood worker into his own special brand of folk carvings. He turned pieces of basswood and poplar into fanciful fish and bewitching mermaids.

Jim carved Jonah inside the body of the whale and created many different animals painted in bright colors. He also fashioned interesting canes out of maple. Jim got so busy making art that when the company finally called to take him back at the strip mine…he decided not to go!*
